Funeral services for Hermann Conheim, Treasurer of the Palestine Foundation Fund, who died on Monday, were held Tuesday afternoon at the residence at 265 West Ninetieth Street.
Rabbi Joseph Sonderling of Brooklyn officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Westchester.
Hundreds of Zionists attended the funeral.
The honorary pallbearers were Judge William M. Lewis, national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, Emanuel Neumann, chairman of the executive committee of the Appeal, Morris Rothenberg, Dr. David J. Kaliski, Abraham Goldberg and Jacob Fishman.
The Board of Directors of the United Palestine Appeal, at a special meeting called for the purpose, adopted a resolution expressing sorrow at the death of Mr. Conheim.
“The United Palestine Appeal has sustained a heavy and irreparable loss in the death of its National Treasurer, Mr. Hermann Conheim,” the resolution read.
“To the labors of the United Palestine Appeal and its manifold problems, Mr. Conheim contributed a mind of great power and insight, enriched by a lifetime of experience in the conduct of large affairs. He brought an even more precious gift, a personality of natural grace and distinction marked by overflowing kindliness, gracious modesty and princely generosity. His loyalty to every cause of the Jewish people, and in particular his life-long zeal and evotion to the restoration of Jewish life in Palestine, have been a dynamic inspiration to his colleagues and followers.
“The Board of Directors of the United Palestine Appeal, at a special meeting assembled for the purpose and by unanimous vote, thus records its grief and profound sense of loss for one whose memory will always be cherished among them with affection and reverence.”
The resolution is signed by Stephen S. Wise, honorary chairman; Judge William M. Lewis, national chairman; Emanuel Neumann, chairman of the executive committee, and Bernard Stone, secretary.
Messages of condolence were received from Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, and Louis Lipsky, president of the Zionist Organization of America, who is now in London.
Emanuel Newmann, chairman of the Executive Committee of the United Palestine Appeal, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary chairman of the Appeal and Morris Rothenberg, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Keren Hayesod, issued statements in appreciation of the achievements of the late Mr. Conheim.
Y.M.H.A. DRIVE FOR $1,500,000 FUND REACHES $412,000
Contributions totalling $102,000, including one of $30,000 from Mrs. Theresa Schiff, widow of the late philan thropist, Jacob H. Schiff, were received by Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, at the Hotel Biltmore headquarters of the $1,500,000 Building Fund. The fund is being sought for the erection of an eleven-story annex to the present quarters of the Association at 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue, which was donated by Mr. Schiff 27 years ago.
Another woman, Mrs. I. C. Crystal, whose late husband was a vice-president of the Y. M. H. A., sent Judge Proskauer a contribution of $7,500 to the fund. This was accompanied by another check for $7,500 from Sydney and Hyman Crystal, nephews of the late I. C. Crystal.
Other contributions received by Judge Proskauer yesterday were: Motty Eitingon, $15,000; Julius Goldman, $10,000; Samuel Sachs, $10,000; Ludwig Vogelstein, $9,000; Abraham Erlanger, $8,500, and William Prager, $6,000.
Yesterday’s contributions have increased the grand total of donations to the Y. M. H. A. Building Fund to $412,000.
The Thirty-second Annual Memorial Services of the Jewish Veterans of the Wars of the Republic will be held on May 22nd, at Riverside Synagogue. New York City. The services will be preceded by a parade from the Jewish Center, 131 West 86th Street.
Among the guests and speakers will be Nathan Straus, Rear Admiral L. M. Joseph-thal, Congressman Sol Bloom and William Irving Sirovich, Maurice Simmons, and the heads of all veteran organizations.
Commander-in-Chief Morris J. Mendelsohn will preside and Rabbi Edward Lissman, Honorary Chaplain-in-Chief, will officiate.
The veterans plan to visit cemeteries within a radius of 25 miles of New York to decorate the graves of Jewish soldiers.
Contract for construction of the new building for Temple Israel, Miami, Fla., was let to the St. John Construction Co. by the building committee of the congregation. Work on the building begins this week.
The plans call for a building containing an an auditorium with a seating capacity of 700 and a school auditorium with a seating capacity of 500. There will be 12 schoolrooms.
An organ will be donated by the sisterhood. The lot and building, when furnished completely, will represent an investment of $250,000.
Public ground breaking, preliminary to beginning construction of the building, took place last Sunday. Dr. Jacob H. Kaplan is rabbi of the congregation.
