The death of Brigadier Frederick H. Kisch, chief engineer of the victorious British Eighth Army, who was killed in action at Sousse, Tunisia, was mourned today at a memorial meeting arranged by the American Emergency Committee for Zionist Affairs at its offices here. Dr. Nahum Goldmann, member of the executive of the World Zionist Organization, presided.
Dr. Chaim Weizmann referred to the synthesis of General Kisch’s loyalties as a Jew and as an Englishmen, and said that he had demonstrated in his own life the harmonious combination of one who was a true Jew and a great patriot of the country of his birth. He related that General Kisch belonged to an old British-Jewish family, civil servant of the British Crown in India and throughout the Empire. His father occupied a high position in the Post Office in India, where General Kisch was born in 1888. His older brother, Sir Cecil Kisch, recently retired from office, was Secretary of the Treasury in England for many years.
Dr. Maurice Hexter, executive director of the Federation of Jewish Charities, formerly a colleague of General Kisch in Jerusalem as a member of the executive of the Jewish Agency, stressed his industry and executive ability. He emphasized the great skill and diplomatic tact which he displayed in dealing with the many difficult problems with which he had to deal in Palestine. Rabbi Meyer Berlin of Jerusalem, president of the World Orthodox Zionist Organization, Mizrachi, who also served with Brigadier Kisch in Palestine, was the last speaker. He said that Palestine mourns his heroic death and will never forget his devotion and loyalty to the country both when he served with the Agency and afterwards, when he lived in Palestine as a private citizen.
