The heads of the congregational and rabbinic bodies of Reform Judaism today denounced the new bombings and escalation of the Viet Nam war, and expressed regret that “President Johnson had succumbed to the will of the Washington militarists.”
Both Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and Rabbi Jacob J. Weinstein, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, termed the new bombings a “drastic and dangerous escalation of the war.” Both leaders felt that the new bombings “increase the dangers of a wider war. ” They called upon all men of good will to make their voices heard in the nation’s capital.
