Le Monde, the influential French newspaper, charged yesterday that the arrest of Dr. Hans Deutsch in Bonn was “a maneuver to discredit him and spoil his reputation. ” Among his clients in compensation claims was the Rothschild family.
“Too many important personalities, ” stated Le Monde, “had intimate contacts with Dr. Deutsch, thus demonstrating his reputation for honesty and thus making it impossible to accept his arrest without objection. “
Le Monde stated that, among personalities who had close contacts with Prof. Deutsch were leaders of the Austrian Government, and prominent cultural and educational leaders in France and Switzerland. “German justice, ” declared Le Monde, “is not above suspicion. We are entitled to express anxiety over the further developments in this case.”
