Lemrick Nelson was sentenced to 19 1/2 years in a federal prison. He was convicted one year ago on federal charges related to the fatal stabbing of rabbinical student Yankel Rosenbaum during the 1991 riots in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, N.Y. The judge in the case, concerned that Nelson will continue to be a menace after he is released, tacked on an extra five years of probation after he completes his sentence. When the sentence was announced in Federal District Court in Brooklyn, the courtroom was jammed with his African American supporters on one side, and members of the Jewish community on the other.
