The Liberty ship Adolph Lewisohn, named for the noted New York financier and philanthropist, slid down the ways here yesterday after having been christened by Mrs. Arthur Lehman, Mr. Lewisohn’s daughter. Mrs. Lehman is a sister-in-law of former Governor Herbert Lehman.
The launching of the Lewisohn brings to five the number of Liberty ships named after Jews. Other such vessels are the Louis Marshall, Samuel Gompers, Haym Salomon and Adolph Ochs. Several warships have also been named after Jews. They are the U.S.S. Jeffrey, the U.S.S. Leopold, and the U.S.S. Seid, named after young officers killed in the present war; and also the U.S.S. Levy named after Commodore Uriah P. Levy and the U.S.S. Ordronaux, named after Captain John Ordronaux, one of the first officers in the United States Navy.
