Friends and associates of the late Moses A. Leavitt will establish a library in Israel in memory of the Joint Distribution Committee’s longtime executive vice-chairman, who died last year at the age of 71. The library is to be an addition to the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The project was announced today by Louis Broido, JDC chairman. The library is to cost $125, 000, to be raised by contributions from Mr. Leavitt’s friends and colleagues, both in the United States and overseas. The Baerwald School was chosen as the site of the memorial library because Mr. Leavitt was largely instrumental in the establishment of the school in 1958. The school was the first undergraduate school in Israel to give a degree in social work, and is now a major source of trained professional personnel for Israel’s welfare agencies, Government departments, and communities.

In announcing the establishment of the Leavitt Memorial Library, Mr. Broido asked that contributions be sent either to the United Jewish Appeal, or direct to JDC. Individuals outside of New York City will be invited to participate in cooperation with local federations and welfare funds.
