Thirty-five Jewish families in Slobodka, the seat of Jewish learning in Lithuania, who make a living from gardening, are facing ruin in view of a decision to expel them from their land and houses which have been in their families for more than a century. The expulsion is threatened because it is intended to erect a church on the land. The Jews have appealed to President Smetena who has promised to consider the matter.
