Lord Herbert C. Plumer, retiring High Commissioner of Palestine, left Jerusalem by special train for England via Egypt. Lord Plumer, accompanied by his wife, has taken a two months leave of absence, following which he will retire from the High Commissionership. He will be succeeded by Sir John Chanceller. H. C. Luke, Civil Secretary, will be Acting High Commissioner until Sir John assumes his post in the fall.
Government officials, foreign consuls and representatives of all communities were present to bid the High Commissioner farewell. The police paraded to the station and the band played the British anthem as Lord Plumer left the city.
In his farewell message Lord Plumer expressed grateful appreciation for the loyal support accorded him during his office. He will always take the deepest interest in the welfare of the country and its people, he declared.
