Mahmoud Abbas placed responsibility for the return of a kidnapped Israeli soldier on the ruling Hamas party. The Palestinian Authority president, who is from the Fatah party, told P.A. Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas that the terrorist group ruling the Palestinian Authority bears sole responsibility for the fate of Cpl. Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier kidnapped in a raid on an Israeli army post Sunday that left two Israeli soldiers dead, Ha’aretz reported. A Hamas spokesman called for terrorist groups to ensure Shalit’s safety. Senior Hamas officials reportedly went underground following the attack, fearing Israeli retaliation. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has ruled out negotiations to secure Shalit’s release.
