Major anti-Iraq war groups have made preventing war with Iran a priority for next year. United for Peace and Justice, the group that has organized the major anti-war rallies, announced on its Web site that its national steering community met and decided that “2008 will be a critical year for ending the war and occupation in Iraq, preventing war on Iran and building a massive peace and justice movement strong enough to change the course of this country.” MoveOn, a group that recruits political activists to liberal causes, launched an ad campaign against what it called Bush administration “saber-rattling” toward Iran.
The Bush administration is seeking to intensify sanctions against Iran until it stops enriching uranium that the West believes is designated for a suspected nuclear weapons program. The administration also says that no option is off the table but denies imminent war plans.
