Major Jewish organizations today issued a joint statement commending President Kennedy’s immigration law proposals and calling upon the Congress to pass them. The statement reads:
“President Kennedy’s proposal for gradual abolition of the national origins quota system is a major step toward the rectification of the discrepancy between our immigration code and the true interests of our nation and the democratic values upon which our national life is based. Enactment of the President’s proposal would manifest to the world our commitment to individual dignity, equality of opportunity and human brotherhood; within our own borders, it would contribute to the campaign for elimination of racism from American life.
“The need for the reforms recommended by the President has been voluminously established by testimony and other data gathered over the years. We urge the Senate and House Committees on Judiciary to report bills incorporating the recommendations out without delay, so that they may be passed in the present Congress.”
The organizations signing the statement were, American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A., National Community Relations Advisory Council, National Council of Jewish Women, Union of American Hebrew Congregation, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, United Hias Service, and United Synagogue of America.
