Major national Jewish organization affiliated with the National Community Relations Advisory Council today addressed an appeal to the American Bowling Congress, asking for the elimination of racial discrimination which the organization practices.
The appeal was addressed to the annual convention which the American Bowling Congress will open in Columbus, Ohio, tomorrow. The Jewish groups emphasized that, the present policy of the sports organization “is contrary to the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship with which American sports are identified.” It urged the delegates to abolish the practice of limiting membership to whites.
The appeal pointed out that the Junior Bowling Congress has adopted the rules of the American Bowling Congress with the result that “thousands of boys and girls are being contaminated by the poison of bigotry.” The signatories of the appeal included the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans and the National Community Relations Advisory Council.
