Aurel Jonescu, religious fanatic who on January 11 last tried unsuccessfully to assassinate Chief Rabbi Jakob Niemirower, will be detained in an insane asylum, the authorities declared today.

Jonescu was arrested after he had fired five shots point blank at Rabbi Niemirower who was on his way to synagogue. Only one of the shots took effect, inflicting a flesh wound from which the rabbi has recovered.

Jonescu is believed to have been inspired in his attempt by Iron Guardists. Three men seen at the shooting are said to have pointed Dr. Niemirower out to the assassin. They escaped arrest.
