For the first time since the creation of the State of Manchukuo, the authorities have given permission for a public address in Yiddish to be delivered here.
The speaker was Melach Rawitch, Yiddish publicist and poet who has come here from Warsaw. He spoke on the position of the Jews in Eastern Europe.
Permission for the lecture was given on condition that it should be translated into Russian by a responsible local person. When Rawitch concluded his address, the president of the Harbin Jewish community repeated it in Russian.
POLISH CLUB BARS JEW
A scandal developed here in the Polish Club, Gospoda Polska, the only Polish club in the whole of the Far East, when a motion by the Polish Consul General M. Kwiatkowski to admit Polish Jews into the club, was rejected.
The Polish Consul General, supported by a group of members of the club, demanded the annulment of one of the paragraphs in the statute which provides that membership of the club is open only to Polish citizens of the Catholic faith. The Consul General argued that this paragraph prevents the large colony of Polish Jews in Harbin from becoming members. It is a discrimination against all other Polish citizens who do not
