Questions concerning the extension of the Jewish Agency and its relations to the Palestine government were put to Sir John Chancellor, High Commissioner of Palestine, by members of the Mandates Commission of the League of Nations which is considering the British government’s report as the Mandatory Power for Palestine. Public finances, and economic equality were also points raised by the members in questioning the High Commissioner.
The municipalities are receiving government subsidies, the High Commissioner stated, but this method is considered unsatisfactory and the government is seeking other means. Palestine’s balance of trade is unfavorable, having a deficit of more than £5,000,000. This, however, is compensated by monies coming in from Jews in other countries and from the tourist traffic, Sir John stated.
The government income from duties was increased by raising the rate and by an increase in trade.
The granting of the Dead Sea concession was raised by a member. The concession was granted to Major Tulloch and Engineer Novomejsky, the High Commissioner replied, because they offered the maximum guarantee.
Petitions submitted by Arab and Jewish groups will be considered the end of this week, as it is usual for the Commission to take up such petitions in the absence of government representatives.
