Four influential members of Mapam’s political committee are sponsoring a motion urging the faction to break away from the Labor Alignment and run for the Knesset on a separate list in next year’s elections. The growing rift in the Socialist-Zionist party between its veteran leadership and younger elements came to light at a meeting last night.
The four sponsors of the break-away motion who exchanged harsh words with veteran Mapam leader Meir Yaari are, Naftali Ben Moshe, head of the party’s trade union section, Chaika Grosman of Kibbutz Evron, Latif Dori, of the Mapam youth movement and Mouhamed Wattad, an Arab Mapam leader.
The four said they did not rule out cooperation with the Labor Party but are opposed to continued contractual ties. Yaari proposed that Mapam remain in the Alignment though he said he favored airing differences between the parties.
