For the first time since the anti-Semitic attacks began in Lwow on Sunday, Jews ventured on the streets of the city today, and many bandaged heads attested to the size of the disorders.
Stores owned by Jews, which have been closed for the last five days, also reopened today, but complaints were heard everywhere that no business was being transacted.
While the mass rioting shows signs of abating here, a strengthening of the anti-Semitic boycott movement is evidenced as well as an increase in individual baiting of Jews which is particularly prominent on trains.
The train attacks reached serious proportions today as students boarded trains leaving Lwow for the specific purpose of baiting the Jewish passengers.
Several Jews travelling from Lwow to Lodz were attacked by students riding for several stations, causing a panic. Several of the passengers succeeded in bringing the train to a halt, but could not find succor as no police were available. As the train resumed its journey, a number of the Jews jumped out preferring to risk their lives in this fashion than to place themselves at the mercy of the anti-Semites. As soon as the train reached an intermediary station, other Jewish passengers alighted.
Among the Jews injured in the train attack are Abraham Handel and Samuel Lendrow.
District Attorney Lukasz of Lwow was attacked on a train and a high official, Krol, was beaten up on the street because they were mistaken for Jews.
Their attackers and later sent a delegation to the Minister of Education to protest. The Minister assured them that no efforts would be spared to insure peace.
The Club of Jewish Deputies made it known today that it would submit an interpellation regarding the riots as soon as the Sejm resumes its sessions of Jewish Deputies, who has come to Lwow to investigate the excesses, yesterday requested the Bank Polski to extend the date of payments due from Jewish merchants since the closing of the stores has rendered business impossible.
A similar request was also presented by Dr. Rosmarin to the income tax authorities.
The “Gazeta Warszawska,” organ of the anti-Semitic National Democratic Party, describes Lwow as presenting a tragic appearance, with police and police cars ubiquitous.
