Maurice Falk, noted Jewish philanthropist and steel executive died here yesterday at the age of 79, after an illness of several months.
Mr. Falk, who rose to leadership of some of the largest steel companies in America, began his career as a tailor in Pittsburgh at the age of fourteen. One of the founders of the Weirton Steel Company and a director of the National Steel Corporation, Mr. Falk established a $10,000,000 fund in 1929 in memory of his first wife, Laura. The fund was earmarked for religious, charitable, and educational welfare. Among the many projects financed by the fund was a study of the resettlement problems of European refugees in the Dominican Republic.
In conjunction with his brother, Leon, Falk also donated $900,000 to the medical center of the University of Pittsburgh. Among his many social welfare affiliations were his directorships of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropy, the Montefiore Hospital, and the Young Man’s and Women’s Hebrew Associations, all of Pittsburgh. He was also a member and director of the Rodef Shalon Congregation.
