Mayor John V. Lindsay greeted New York’s Jewish community on the eve of Passover today. He characterized Passover as the symbol of an historic struggle against oppression with a contemporary message. “It declares that whenever and wherever oppression and injustice manifest themselves, they must be fought and overcome so that we may strive to attain the ever-living ideals of justice and brother-hood proclaimed by the Hebrew prophets.”
Lindsay deplored the condition of Jews in the Soviet Union who are “deprived of their basic human right” to emigrate and who “suffer from discrimination in employment and other spheres of life.” He said an end must also be sought to the conditions of Jews in Arab countries who are “victims of a hostile majority.”
