An appeal to American Jewry to provide financial aid to the Tel Aviv University was made here today by Mayor Mordecai Namir of Tel Aviv, at a press conference. Mayor Namir will visit a number of Jewish communities in this country to develop support for the university of which he is chairman of the executive board.
“The role of the university in every country today is a vital one, and for us in Israel, it is absolutely critical, “the Mayor said. “With our limited area and limited resources, we must make the most effective possible use of our manpower.” He pointed out that Tel Aviv University was conceived with the purpose to permit the families of limited financial means to send their children to a university. “Our university enables families in the lower income groups to send their children to the university since they are able to live at home and also work in their free hours. This was not possible before,” he said.
University president Dr. George S. Wise explained that the organization and construction of Tel Aviv University, now underway, would have been impossible ten years ago because of the shortage of staff in Israel.
