Sen. George McGovern (D., S.D.), promised yesterday that he would do everything in his power to speed up the delivery of more Phantom jets to Israel. McGovern, the only declared candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972, stopped briefly at Lydda Airport on his way to the Far East. He told newsmen that “the Middle East is important to the United States for reasons of her own security.” adding that the U.S. should place greater emphasis on the Mideast than on Vietnam. He said that Israel and her Arab neighbors should be encouraged to hold face-to-face talks. “It is possible, though it won’t happen overnight.” McGovern said.
