Members of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak’s bloc are concerned that a campaign finance scandal will hurt its efforts to lobby for public approval of a national referendum on any future peace accord with Syria. In the wake of a report by the state comptroller, Israel’s attorney general last week ordered a police probe of suspected campaign finance violations by One Israel in last year’s election, including allegations that nonprofit organizations illegally funded Barak’s prime ministerial bid.
