The retirement of Mendel N. Fisher as executive director of the Jewish National Fund of America, a post he has held for 27 years, was announced today by Albert Schiff, JNF president. Mr. Schiff said that the JNF board had accepted Mr. Fisher’s resignation with reluctance, yielding on his insistence that he wanted to retire after serving for more than a quarter of a century. He will continue to serve the JNF as a consultant and secretary.
In paying tribute to Mr. Fisher, the JNF president recalled his role as “architect of the Jewish National Fund of America,” raising the Fund from lowly beginnings to one of Israel’s leading fund-raising institutions in the United States. “It was due to Mr. Fisher’s dynamic personality and leadership that close to $200,000,000 have been raised in the U.S. through the Jewish National Fund,” said Mr. Schiff. Mr. Fisher’s contributions to the establishment and upbuilding of the State of Israel through the mobilization of large resources for the land redemption and land reclamation program of the JNF, place him among the foremost builders of the Jewish Homeland.”
