Impressive funeral services were held today for Mrs. Miriam Shomer Zunser, author and playwright, who died Thursday at her home, aged 68. She was the wife of Charles Zunser, former head of the National Desertion Bureau and the daughter of the Yiddish novelist N.M. Shaikewitch, who wrote under the name of Shomer.
Born in Odessa, Russia, she came to the United States as a child, and as a young woman taught painting at the Educational Alliance, a lower East Side settlement house. She was the author of “Yesterday,” a family chronicle of three generations of Jewish life in Russia and the United States. In collaboration with her sister, Mrs. Rose Bachelis, she wrote many Yiddish plays.
Mrs. Zunser was a founder and first president of Mailman, a society for the promotion of Jewish music. One of Henrietta Szold’s co-workers in the early years of Hadassah, she was a founder of the Brooklyn Chapter of that organization and for three years headed the New York Chapter. She was treasurer of the Jewish Music Forum.
