A new Hebrew University secondary school to serve as a teachers training unit for the John Dewey School of Education of the university, was dedicated here today. The sum of $500,000 for the buildings of the school was provided by the National Council of Jewish Women of the U.S.
Mrs. Charles Hymes of Minneapolis, president of the National Council of Jewish Women, was one of the principal speakers at the dedication ceremony. Another speaker was Israel’s Minister of Education, Abba Eban. He emphasized that the project would provide a setting for experiments which will influence secondary schools all over Israel, and encourage the training of teachers in the most modern techniques and democratic values.
The high school facilities were planned Jointly by educators and school designers from both Israel and the U. S. “The Council’s long-time interest in helping Israel strengthen her educational facilities has taken a large step forward with the completion of this model school,” declared Mrs. Hymes. “The techniques and programs developed at the Hebrew University High School will reach into every part of Israel,” she predicted.
The project, which includes three buildings, was built at a cost of 2,500,000 pounds ($833,000), of which 1,500,000 pounds ($500,000) were provided by the American women’s group. The school will accommodate some 1,000 students, and will contain classrooms, conference rooms, lecture halls, an auditorium and a special amphitheater arrangement where student teachers can observe experienced teachers conduct classes.
