James G. McDonald, retiring American Ambassador to Israel, will be replaced by Monnet B. Davis, who is now Ambassador to Panama, it was reported this week-end by informed sources here.
Ambassador Davis’ name has been submitted to Israel in keeping with customary procedure of first asking a country if it is willing to receive a particular ambassador. Mr. Davis, who is 57, has served in the American Foreign Service since 1917. Because the nomination is still in the process of being forwarded through official channels, neither the Israel Embassy nor the State Department will comment officially.
