Haifa port had a new tourist attraction today in the form of the Queen Elizabeth 2, the largest passenger liner ever to visit Israeli ports. The 65,800-ton Cunarder arrived last night from Ashdod where she disembarked over 600 passengers on a Passover cruise to Israel. She will remain in Haifa for 10 days serving as a hotel for her passengers who will attend Israel’s 25th anniversary Independence Day celebrations May 7.
Another arrival at Haifa yesterday, one with a silhouette familiar to Israelis, was the West German cruise ship Hanseatic, formerly the Shalom, flagship of Israel’s merchant fleet prior to her sale to Germany in 1967. The Hanseatic brought in some 700 tourists. The Turkish liner Izmir arrived yesterday with 125 Turkish-based NATO officials and their families on a visit to Israel. The Greek liner Appolonia also docked with several hundred tourists and immigrants.
