News Brief

More than half of Israelis support talks between Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas, a poll showed.

Some 51 percent of those questioned in a Ha’aretz-Dialog survey said they support the high-level diplomatic contacts between the Israeli prime minister and the Palestinian Authority president, and 42 percent said they opposed the talks.

Nearly a third of respondents said that current investigations against Olmert should be halted so he can govern more effectively, Ha’aretz reported. According to the poll, 28 percent favored freezing the investigations, while 64 percent disagreed that they should be suspended.

Olmert’s approval ratings in the periodic poll did not change from the previous survey, with 15 percent approving of the prime minister’s job performance and 74 percent dissatisfied with it.

The survey polled 502 respondents.
