Members of the Appeal to Conscience Foundation, which is composed of Catholics. Protestants and Jews, expressed “deep dismay” yesterday that the Soviet Union had failed to honor a promise it made to a four-man Appeal delegation in Moscow last April to provide the Russian Jewish community with 10,000 prayer books before the High Holy Days.
Rabbi Arthur Schneier of Park East Synagogue, New York, president of the Foundation, said that it had sought the intervention of the Soviet Embassy in August to ascertain the status of the printing and distribution of the promised books, and had written and cabled Moscow without reply. He said there was no indication that the prayer books had been printed.
The Foundation, its spokesman said, has renewed its offer to ship 10,000 prayer books into the Soviet Union at its own cost and he said “we are willing to make the delivery by air, no matter what the cost, to ensure their receipt by Yom Kippur.”
