The importance of private charity was emphasized by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt today at a luncheon in the Hotel Commodore which opened the campaign of the women’s division of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies to raise a deficit of $2,636,000 to fill a $4,350,000 budget.
More than 1,000 communal and welfare leaders attended a dinner at the Commodore last night which opened the campaign. Speakers were John G. Winant, chairman of the United States Social Security Board; Max D. Steuer; Samuel D. Leidesdorf, president of the Federation; Mrs. Sidney C. Borg, chairman of the women’s division and John Mortimer Schiff, chairman of the dinner committee, who presided.
