It is reported that the government is now considering giving this large Jewish colony a municipal charter in substitution for its present legal status as a local council area.
The annual budget of the colony is £25,000, and it takes fifth place in the country after Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Jaffa, and Haifa, which have the first four largest budgets.
If Petah-Tikvah receives municipality status, it will be the second all-Jewish center to have a special municipal corporation. There are about 16,000 inhabitants in the colony, which was established in 1878 by Jerusalem Jews.
