N. J. Adopts $250,000 Quota in U.p.a.; Senator King and Morris Rothenberg Speak

A quota of $250,000 for this year’s United Palestine Appeal in the State of New Jersey was adopted at the New Jersey Annual Conference on Palestine held here yesterday. Newark’s share was set at $110,000.

More than 1,000 persons attended a mass meeting held Sunday afternoon at Temple B’nai Abraham and listened to the addresses of Senator King of Utah and Morris Rothenberg, vicepresdent of the Zionist organization. Senator King in his address scored non-Zionists who claim they owe allegiance only to America. ” I distrust the patriotism of men who call themselves one hundred percent Americans and yet do not take a warm interest in the homelands of their ancestors,” he declared. Rabbi Julius Silberfeld, Michael Hollander and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Kalisch addressed the gathering. Messages were read from Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Nathan Straus and Sir Esme Howard.

Aaron Levinstone, State Chairman of the U. P. A. presided at the sessions of the conference held in the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. building, which was attended by 200 delegates from all over the State. Upon Mr. Levinstone’s declining renomination for State Chairman, Philip J. Schotland, was elected to succeed him. Michael Hollander was re-elected honorary chairman and the honorary vice-chairmen elected were Harry Goldowsky of Jersey City, Judge William Newcom of Plainfield and Mr. Levinstone.

Several thousand people from Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn, attended the annual Purim Ball of the Independent Order B’nai Brith, sponsored by the Metropolltan Conference, District No. 1, of the Order.

Rabbi Abraham Burstein pronounced the in vocation. He was followed by Meyer Plotz, Chairman of the Entertainment Committee.

L. E. Schlechter is Chairman of the Metropolitan Conference; Theodore Radman was Chairman of Committee on Arrangements.

The proceeds of the Purim Ball will go to the campaign of the Wider Scope Committee of the order.

The problem of Jewish education will feature the program of the New York State Brunch Convention of the United Synagogue of America, which was made public by Rabbi Samuel M. Chen, Execntive Secretary. The Convention will be held next Sunday in the new Anshe Chesed Temple. 100th Street and West End Avenue, New York City.
