A goal of $5,300,000 was set yesterday by the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies as the quota of the 1928 appeal to be made next month in behalf of its ninety-one constituent institutions, according to an announcement by Felix M. Warburg, chairman of the Federation board.
The goal, Mr. Warburg stated, was based on the recommendations of the Distribution Committee of the Federation, no member of which is connected with any of the affiliated societies. “The committee,” stated Mr. Warburg, “prepared its annual budget after a most careful investigation and the funds are distributed with a complete understanding of the community problem and with a fair proportion to each type of work and each individual institution.”
Mr. Warburg said that in line with the policy inaugurated last year, the Federation will not countenance the more sensational features usually associated with a big-scale money-raising program, and although the sum requested from the Jewish community is said to be the greatest any local family of philanthropic agencies has asked for maintenance purposes, the committees directing the campaign have put their official disapproval on “ballyhoo” methods.
Campaign organization is being effected in the 124 trades and professions which comprise the Business Men’s Council of the Federation, under the chairmanship of Dudley D. Sicher. For the first time in the twelve years of its history Federation will have campaign headquarters in its own home, the new Federation Building at 71 West Forty-seventh Street.
Sol. M. Stroock, president of the Federation, in a statement accompanying the announcement by Mr. Warburg, declared that the task of the Federation is greater this year than at any previous time in its history and “that every Jew must be asked to join in this high comradeship of service.
An Association of Synagogues, Temples and Men’s Clubs of Brooklyn was formed at a dinner Monday night in the Jewish Centre, 667 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn.
The association will aid the $1,035,000 campaign that the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities plans, starting October 17.
Judge Grover M. Moskowitz and Nathan D. Shapiro are joint chairmen of the association. Speakers at the meeting were Samuel Rothenberg, president of the Jewish Centre; Mr. Shapiro and Dr. Samuel C. Kohs. Thirty-four presidents of synagogues, temples and centres were present.
