Mayor Robert F. Wagner today announced the observance by the City of New York of May 13, 1960 as “Israel Independence Day in New York City.” In a proclamation issued in connection with the forthcoming 12th anniversary of Israel’s statehood, Mayor Wagner lauded the Jewish State as a “bulwark of democracy for the free world against expansion by aggressors.”
Ceremonies marking Israel Independence Day will be held on May 12 on the steps of City Hall. Israel’s new Consul General, Dr. Benjamin Eliav, will represent his Government at the observance. New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller will also participate.
