Efforts on the part of President Nasser of the United Arab Republic to induce governments of other Arab states to break off relations with Iran, in retaliation for the recent statement by the Shah that he would continue his de facto recognition of Israel, have so far brought no results. Reports received here today from various Arab countries indicate that their governments are hesitating to take any action against Iran.
Determined not to be isolated in his extreme action against Iran, Nasser summoned yesterday his ambassadors from all the Arab countries to Cairo to discuss the problem with them. At the same time Nasser’s Foreign Ministry ordered the Iranian Ambassador to the ten his departure from Cairo.
It is now obvious that Nasser is afraid that Iran’s courageous example may be emulated by other Moslem countries which are abstaining from giving recognition to Israel. Nasser’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Fawzi indicated yesterday publicly in Cairo that the United Arab Republic is planning a boycott against Iran similar to that of Israel. However it is questionable whether other Arab countries would follow Nasser’s lead in this respect. The question may come up before the Arab League Council, but the Council does not meet before August 22nd.
