Nathan Lowenstein, former member of the Austrian Hungarian Parliament, and member of the first Polish Sejm died here yesterday at the age of 71.
Dr. Lowenstein, who was a well known jurist, was the leader of the so called Assimilatinist group in Polish Jewry. During the trial of Stanislay Steiger, the Jewish student who was charged with conspiracy against the life of the president of the Polish Republic, but was later acquitted. Dr. Lowenstein acted as one of the counsel for the defense. It was during this trial that Lowenstein, in a critical moment, uttered a phrase which became famous in Poland. Pleading for his client, he turned to the tribunal, declaring: “I, an aged man, in the face of the majesty of death, declare my belief in Steiger’s innocence and appeal to you for his acquittal.”
