The 26th annual observance of Brotherhood Week was underway today in more than 100, 000 communities throughout the United States. The tone for the annual event was set by Dr. Lewis W. Jones, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, sponsor of the event, who said the observance presented “a challenge to men of good will everywhere to make real our country’s pledge of ‘one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. “

Emphasizing that Brotherhood Week was not “set aside as the one week in the year to practice brotherhood,” Dr. Jones said “rather it is a time of renewal and resolution to sustain brotherhood throughout the year.”

George McKibbin, Chicago attorney who is national chairman, said that “the recent bombings of high schools and houses of worship are the ugly and immoral acts of a few extremists. ” He said that the American people “more than ever” were “in a mood to express their adherence to the time-honored principles of the nation. “

Special religious services were held in churches yesterday. Similar services are scheduled in synagogues and churches throughout the week. A highlight will be the presentation of scrolls at special ceremonies to 34 winners of brotherhood awards chosen from all fields of mass communication.

In New York.. Mayor Wagner issued a proclamation today proclaiming the week.
