The name of a Jewish Naval officer who played a key role in the campaign to abolish flogging in the United States Navy was memorialized here yesterday, when the new Jewish chapel at the Norfolk Naval base was named the “Commodore Levy Chapel.” The ceremonies held in conjunction with the naming of the chapel–the Navy’s first permanent Jewish chapel–were sponsored by the National Jewish Welfare Board’s Armed Services Committee and the Norfolk Jewish Community Council.
Chaplain Joshua L. Goldberg made the principal address at the exercises. Officiating at the religious services was Chaplain Samuel Sobel, Jewish chaplain at the Norfolk area. Rear Admiral F. Massie Hughes, Commandant of the Fifth Naval District, was honorary chairman of the program.
