The death this afternoon of Ernst von Rath, 32-year-old third secretary of the German Embassy, tonight placed his 17-year-old Jewish assailant, Herschel Grynszpan, within the shadow of the death penalty and aggravated the international aspect of the case.

The young Polish Jew has been detained by the Paris police ever since Monday, when he stepped into the German Embassy, announced he was a “race avenger” and fired two bullets into the body of von Rath.
