Gravely suspicious of the circumstances of the shooting of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu in a jail break today in Rumania, the Nazi press asserted tonight that the event will have profound repercussions on the Bucharest Government. The Nachtausgabe asserted that the official Rumanian communique threw little light on the circumstances of Codreanu’s death.
“Codreanu’s aim, which he pursued with tenacity in the Iron Guard, was the complete re-birth of Rumania and notably a complete change in its policies,” the newspaper said. The Nachtausgabe asserted that the Bucharest Government had clearly intended to destroy the Codreanu faction, and had treated the Fascist leader like a “common criminal” after he was convicted.
