In mass meetings held at the site of postwar internment camps in Lower Saxony and in Hesse, thousands of Germans who were interned there by the Allies shortly after the war as particularly dangerous or high-ranking Nazis have demanded “indemnification” for their “illegal detention.” Resolutions were adopted which called for compensation “along the same lines as that granted to former concentration camp inmates.”
At the meetings the German Party, a member of Chancellor Adenauer’s governmental coalition, distributed electioneering handbills soliciting the support of the ex-internees. The Hesse rally, held at Schwarzenborn, was addressed by the chairman of the German Party for Hesse, Dr. Schranz, the former Nazi mayor of Offenbach who polled almost a quarter of the vote there in the last local elections.
At Oerkpe in Lower Saxony, the featured speaker was Dr. Emil Ehrich, former personal aide to Heinrich Hellwege, a member of the Bonn cabinet, and at present chief organizer for the German Party in Lower Saxony.
