While claiming that they do not intend to establish a Jewish ghetto in Lwow along the same lines as was done in other cities of Nazi-held Poland, the Nazi authorities in Lwow today ordered the Jewish Community Council there to recruit a force of 500 Jewish policemen to maintain order in the “Jewish quarter” of the city to where some 120,000 Jews are to be removed by December 12.
The order is published in the Krakauer Zeitung, official Nazi organ in occupied Poland, which announces that the city of Lwow will be divided into four separate quarters so that each nationality – the Germans, the Ukrainians, the Poles and the Jews will be segregated from the other and live its own life.
“Jewish stores located outside the section of the city which has been designated as the ‘Jewish quarter’ will not be transferred to the Jewish territory, but will have to be sold to Germans for a nominal sum,” the Krakauer Zeitung declares. It reveals that Jews will be allowed to take their belongings with them when moving to their new quarters, but that “no damage must be done either to the buildings or to the fixtures within the houses.” The Jewish Community Council will be fined for any damage discovered, the Nazi newspaper warns.
The Krakauer Zeitung also announces that Jewish stores in Lwow which are not situated in the “Jewish quarter” must remain locked between now and the day when their owners move into the segregated area.
