Hundreds of Jewish students whose university careers are endangered by high registration fees demanded in Polish schools are besieging the Warsaw Jewish community offices demanding a subsidy to enable them to continue in college.
The siege began Wednesday when 700 students invaded the Jewish community offices demanding help. A hurriedly-called and stormy session of the cultural committee decided to assign 5,000 zloty (approximately $1,000) for the students, but they objected, demanding at least 100,000 zloty (about $20,000).
Community leaders assert there are no funds available for the purpose, and that in any event preference must be given to Hebrew and artisans schools.
Left wing Jewish students also stormed the office of the community, demanding a similar subsidy for left wing Jewish students. They denounced the “clerical Fascist Zionist community leadership.”
Police detachments are guarding the community offices. No arrests were made.
