Establishment of a Jewish-owned airline which would link Palestine to the United States is envisioned by Abel Shaban, prominent local financier, who has broached the plan to representatives of the Jewish Agency.
Mr. Shaban, among other interests, heads a local aviation company called Air Taxis, which operates planes between England and South Africa. He has proposed to Eliezer Kaplan and S.Z. Shragai, of the Jewish Agency, that Air Taxis and the Agency form a jointly-owned subsidiary in Palestine, which would operate a regular air service between Palestine and Europe, Palestine and the U.S., and Palestine and South Africa. Details of the scheme are now being studied.
Mr. Shaban, who recently returned from a three-month visit to England, the U.S. and various countries of Europe, reports that there is a plan afoot in England to form an organization similar to the Joint Distribution Committee, to carry out relief work on behalf of the British Commonwealth nations. The new group would not compete with the JDC, but work in close cooperation with it. Representatives of the South African Jewish War Appeal are discussing the proposal in London with Anglo-Jewish leaders, Mr. Shaban disclosed.
