New Deal Effect on Sabbath Observance to Be Considered Today in Symposium

The National Recovery Assembly convened by the United Synagogue of America and affiliated and allied organizations to make a study of the effect of the “new deal” on Jewish religious life and to formulate a program to meet the new situation will open this morning at the Hotel Commodore.

The United Synagogue of America, the Rabbinical Assembly of America, the National Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, the Women’s League of the United Synagogue and the Young People’s League, comprising a total of more than 750 organizations, will take part in the Assembly.

The morning session will consider two problems, “Democratizing the United Synagogue” and “Recapturing the Sabbath”.

Barnett E. Kopelman of New York is chairman of the committee on “Democratizing the United Synagogue” and Dr. Israel Goldfarb of Brooklyn, will preside over the “Recapturing the Sabbath” study.

The afternoon session will be devoted to a consideration of “The New Leisure”, its opportunities for the synagogue and what can be done to utilize it for the enrichment of Jewish life. Dr. Elias M. Solomon will preside at this session.

“The Share of the Men’s Clubs in this Program” and “The Contribution of the Young People’s League” will be discussed by Theodore Charnas, Harry Goebel and Dr. I. David Cohen.

Israel Silberman will discuss the question of “The United Synagogue and the Synagogue.”

The problem of ways and means of bringing the Jewish working men back to the synagogue will form an important part of the discussion at the Assembly.

A reception to the delegates will be given this evening. Prominent lay and religious speakers will address the delegates.
