Seventy-four Jewish refugees who arrived here yesterday from Spain and Portugal aboard the Portuguese steamer Serpa Pinto, are expected to leave for Canada today in a sealed train, as soon as immigration and custom officials have completed their inquiries. Among the arrivals are fifteen children.
The refugees were met at the dock by representatives of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies of Canada and the Hebrew Imigrant Aid Society. The Congress and the Canadian National Committee for Refugees were instrumental in securing the Canadian Government’s permission for the refugees to immigrate there.
Most of the refugees had reached Spain and Portugal by fleeing across the Fyrenees from France, where they were interned. They are the second group destined for Canada to arrive here in recent months. In March some 276 arrived. Most of them have already found employment.
