A Humane Slaughter Bill which is opposed unanimously by New Jersey Jewish organizations, was, voted out of Committee last night for action by the New Jersey Assembly. Jewish organization representatives appeared at the Assembly chambers in Trenton to protest the bill.
The bill would in effect outlaw kosher slaughter in New Jersey by banning shackling and hoisting of animals prior to slaughter. This is the only form of pre-handling of meat animals used now in New Jersey slaughterhouses.
Approval by the Assembly Committee on Institutions, Public Health and Welfare of Bill A – 311 on a bi-partisan basis clears the way for consideration by the majority leadership Thursday when bills will be posted for voting on May 9. The majority leadership will decide Thursday whether or not to approve A -311 for action by the Assembly.
