Isaac Stern, the world famous violinist, today announced a new music project in Israel. He said a music and art center would open in Jerusalem this summer for the purpose of establishing a framework where music students and their teachers can meet with internationally known performers to play and discuss music, improve their training and further their art.
Stern, who will be the director of the project; made the announcement at a press conference held by the American-Israel Cultural Foundation. He said the project was privately funded by a source which asks to remain anonymous. He announced that the opening of the center will be the occasion for a regathering of many of the artists who participated in the first Israel Festival 13 years ago.
These include Pablo Casals who will arrive in Israel Aug. 6 and has agreed to spend 6-4 weeks there Alexander Schneider, Leonard Rose and Eugene Istomin. Stern said he would be in Israel beginning Aug. 9. An orchestra of professionals and young players that will rehearse 3-4 times a week with Casals and the others. Stern said that the center is now under construction in the Mishkenot Shaananim section of Jerusalem.
