Sir Gilbert Clayton, the new Civil Secretary for Palestine, welcomed at a meeting of the Zionist Executive yesterday, announced his determination to adhere to the White Paper, the British Government statement of June 1922, promulgating its policy in Palestine.

In assuming office Sir Gilbert said he had taken into account the British guarantees for the erection of the Jewish National Home on the one hand, and on the other, the Arab aspirations. Although he appreciated the difficulties, he was not without hope of their adjustment, he said.

Sir Gilbert succeeds Sir Wyndham Deedes as Secretary to the post which in another country is equivalent to that of Minister of Interior, and which his predecessor held continuously since the advent of Sir Herbert Samuel.
